Vocabulary
Landfill
Landfill is a place where rubbish and waste are buried under the ground. For example, when we throw away things that cannot be reused or recycled, they often end up in landfill.
Recycle
To recycle means to take old items that we do not need any more, like paper, plastic bottles or cans, and turn them into something new. For example, your empty milk carton can be recycled into new paper products.
Reduce
To reduce means to use less of something so that we make less waste. For example, bringing a reusable water bottle to school every day means you use less single-use plastic bottles and create less waste.
Reuse
To reuse means to use an item again instead of throwing it away after one use. For example, you can reuse a glass jar to store pencils or snacks instead of putting it into the bin.
Waste hierarchy
The waste hierarchy is a way of showing which actions are best for looking after the environment by sorting waste. At the top is 'Avoid', followed by 'Reduce', 'Reuse', 'Repair', 'Recycle', and 'Dispose' at the very bottom. For example, using your own lunchbox instead of disposable plastic is a way to reduce and avoid single-use waste.
