Clean Up - There's No Waste In Nature (home learning)

Vocabulary

Name Class

Compost

Compost is what we call the mixture made when natural things like food scraps and leaves break down and turn into rich soil. For example, when we put banana peels in a compost bin, they break down and become soil that helps plants grow.

Decompose

Decompose means to break down into smaller parts, usually by tiny living things like bacteria or worms. For example, when a leaf falls to the ground, over time it will decompose and become part of the soil.

Habitat

A habitat is the place where a plant or animal lives and gets everything it needs, just like your home is your habitat. For example, a bird’s habitat might be a tree in a park where it can build its nest, find food and stay safe.

Nutrients

Nutrients are important substances that living things need to grow strong and stay healthy. For example, when leaves and food scraps decompose, they add nutrients to the soil that help plants grow.

Recycling

Recycling is when we take things we do not need anymore, like old paper or bottles, and turn them into something new instead of throwing them away. For example, recycling old newspapers means they can be used to make new paper instead of being wasted.
