Fairy Garden - Activity Instructions

Use natural collected materials and objects from around your home to create a fairy garden. If you don’t have a garden you could create one in a pot plant, in your bedroom or in the park.

Safety advice: Ensure kids wash their hands thoroughly when they have been playing in the garden.

Step 1.

Next time you are in the garden or out on a walk, collect natural objects that catch your eye. These might include sticks, leaves, nuts and pods, pieces of bark and flowers.

Step 2.

When you get home, ask a parent or caregiver if you can look through the junk drawers and around the home for any small junk or recyclable objects you could use. You might also need some binding materials like rope, elastic bands and string.

Step 3.

Look at what you have collected and with a piece of paper and pencil, draw a design of how you could use the parts to make a fairy house. What could you use for the roof? What could you use for a door? Will your house have a pool? Will your fairies have a car? If you don’t like fairies, you could make a house for a lizard or a mouse instead. Don’t forget to label (write) what each part of the house is made of.

Step 4.

Build the fairy house you designed in the garden, in your room or out on the balcony (ask a parent or caregiver where might be best). Do you like your design? Is there anything you would like to change? It is fine to make changes as you build to improve upon your first design.

Taking It Further

Can you find or make figurines so you have people or animals who live in your house? You can use these as characters in your own stories. Maybe have a go at writing down your stories. Or, you could write a letter to the fairies that live in your garden. Can you write a letter on a piece of bark or a leaf? You will have to write very small!
