Connect your Years 5 - 7 students with Australian STEM professionals and turn letter writing into learning and meaningful connections through STEMpals.
This unique pen pal program and collection of cross-curricular teaching resources introduce students to the people, career pathways, and opportunities within STEM.
Explore the people and pathways in STEM with STEMpals’ curriculum-aligned activities.
Through drawing, letter writing, and reflection, students will challenge stereotypes, explore what STEM professionals actually do, and begin to picture themselves in those careers. Use these activities independently or to prepare students for the full STEMpals program.
Want to join the program? Register for the full STEMpals program, starting in Term 1, and connect your students their own STEM professional pen pal. More details below!
Sign up your class through the STEMpals website. Participation costs $35 per student per year, with subsidised and free places available for eligible schools. All letters are reviewed before being exchanged to protect students' privacy.
In Term 1, each student is matched with an Australian STEM professional based on shared interests and hobbies. Students get to know their pen pal, discover what they do, and learn about their career in science, technology, engineering, or maths.
Students exchange three personalised letters with their STEM pen pal throughout the year, exploring career pathways and asking questions along the way. Over 10,000 letters have already been shared through the STEMpals program!
In Term 4, students have the opportunity to meet a STEM professional through a virtual classroom visit. Reflection activities help them revisit their ideas about STEM careers and how their perceptions may have changed.
STEMpals is an Australian charity helping young people see the possibilities for their own futures in STEM, one letter at a time.
Through its unique pen pal program, STEMpals connects students in Years 5 & 6 with Australian STEM professionals. These connections help to build scientific literacy, explore diverse career pathways, and challenge stereotypes about who works in science, technology, engineering, and maths.
