Course Summary
Make a Difference supports teachers to help their students develop concrete plans for meaningful contribution, showing how to move from understanding their ‘why?’ to creating lasting positive change that benefits people, place and planet. The course is the fourth of four courses in The Dr Phil Cummins Character Education Series, a research-based character formation program that helps young people aged 15 and above to ask and answer powerful questions about how they can lead a life that is both worthwhile and well-lived. This course was prepared with the support of The Sydney Character Initiative (Australia’s tertiary home for character education located at The University of Sydney) and Dr Phil’s own company (a School for tomorrow.) in association with the book series of the same name published by Amba Press.
You will learn:
what is the character to make a difference through the things that matter, telling your story and getting it done
how students can create a plan to put their sense of purpose into practice for the sake of people and place and planet
how teachers can support students to form character by moving from purpose to contribution through their teaching practice and professional relationships with them.
Course Time

Dr Phil Cummins is the Hooke Family Professor of Practice in Educational Leadership at the University of Sydney and the Director of The Sydney Character Initiative – Australia’s tertiary home for character education. Since 1988 when he began teaching high school history, Phil has taught, led, researched and spoken in schools all over the world. The founder of CIRCLE Education group and the recipient of multiple awards and fellowships recognising his contribution to education, Phil has led the world’s longest-running and largest research program in character education – the “who?” that forms the most compelling reason for what we do at school. Phil has written nearly 40 books, many of which have been published by Amba Press, including A Life of Purpose, the first book in the Dr Phil Cummins Character Education Series. A Life of Purpose helps students to uncover their core purpose and personal narrative. This course is designed to accompany the book.
