Lesson Summary

Students will explore how batteries store and release energy, and why they are important for making renewable energy more reliable. They will investigate how battery storage supports Australia’s energy transition and the roles people play in designing and managing these systems. To apply their learning, students will design and present a proposal for a school energy system that uses renewable energy and battery storage to benefit their community.

Learning intentions

Students will:

  • understand how batteries store and release energy, and their role in supporting renewable energy systems
  • explore how battery storage is used in Australia’s energy transition, including the roles people play in designing and managing these systems.

Success criteria

Students will:

  • outline how battery storage systems capture, store and release energy to support renewable energy use
  • design and communicate a proposal for a school energy system that includes battery storage and explains its environmental, social and economic benefits.
