Tune In: Advertising detectives

Step 1

Begin by playing short child friendly sports-related commercials that promote being active. Ask the students to tune in and consider what they see, hear and feel during each clip. Start with the Milo cereal (youtube.com/watch?v=1Ab156vt-XA) advertisement, followed by the Weet-bix Kids (youtube.com/watch?v=IS7kIViYuNo). As they watch, encourage students to jot down anything that stands out to them, like colours, sounds, or emotions.

Step 2

Bring the class together for a discussion. Ask students: What did you notice? Did the advertisement keep your attention? Are you sold? Why or why not?

Next, ask students to ‘Turn and talk’ with a partner, to discuss

What did you see, feel and hear during the clips?’
What did you notice about specific colours, catchy tunes and what images are used?

Choose students to share the ideas they discussed. Write down any shared ideas on the board...

Then, guide the conversations towards persuasive tools and techniques. Explain that advertisers use images, colours, sounds and catchy tunes to make their products more appealing to buy and be influenced to take action.

Explain to the class that they are going to use these tools to inspire the creation of their own skipping fundraiser/event, encouraging others to get moving and support a good cause.

Find Out: Finding the heart of the message

Step 1

Organise the students to take part in a ‘Pair then Share’ activity. Use the questions as prompts to encourage student discussion, focusing on skipping and how your experience can help to create advertising for the fundraiser.

Ask the students to consider:

How does skipping make you feel?
Why is skipping good for us?
What does skipping do for our hearts?

Provide mini whiteboards or paper for students to write down their ‘Top 5 reasons to skip’ and share with their partner. Model the writing structure, including a heading and placement of numbered dot points for five reasons.

Invite students to return to the group to share their ideas with the whole class. Ask all students to hold up a thumbs up or down as they share their ideas, indicating whether they have a similar response. Encourage students to share ‘new’ or ‘different’ reasons to showcase a wide range of thoughts and feelings about skipping.

Write and display the student ideas on a large piece of paper. Encourage students to vote on the ‘top reasons’. Using coloured dots or marker pens to ‘vote’, students select their choice on the top reason to skip. Based on the number of votes, identify the class’s top 5 reasons.

Step 2

On the board, draw a large T-chart. Label one column ‘Top 5 Reasons to Skip’ and the other ‘Persuasive Advertising Tools’. Explain that the class will explore how advertisers persuade people and what they can do to use similar techniques to get others excited about skipping.

Model how to use the T-chart. Start by brainstorming a list of ‘Tools of Advertising’ together.

Explain the basic tools of advertising:

Reasons (the “why”. Why is skipping important? Why should someone want to do it?)
Slogan (a short, snappy statement that captures attention)
Rhyme (making the message catchy, easy to remember)
Movement (actions or gestures to help reinforce the message)

Ask students to contribute ideas and to make connections with how advertising works to capture attention. Ask what they have noticed in ads that makes an audience pay attention. How could these same tricks work to help others get skipping?

Encourage students to use advertising language, such as rhyming, slogans, messaging, and movement.

Model this example of using the tools to turn a reason into an impactful message

Reason: Skipping is fun

Slogan: Double the fun, double the skips!

Rhyme: Grab a mate, skipping is great

Movement: Create a skipping routine to music or a well-known tune.

Encourage the students to work in pairs and choose one reason to skip, then use the tools to create their own persuasive messages. Distribute the Student Worksheet to each pair, asking them to record their plans and ideas.

Once pairs have finished, bring students together to share their ideas. Celebrate their creativity and discuss which ideas stood out and why.

Lead a ‘turn and talk’ using these questions:

How did the Heart Foundation engage you as an audience?
What visual media techniques did they use?
What sounds, music, images and colours did you notice?
How did the pace or speed compare with Milo and Weet-Bix ads we watched earlier?

Choose student volunteers to share their partners' answers.

Replay the clip: Hand on heart (30 seconds) by the Heart Foundation to give students an opportunity to notice any details they missed.

Follow with a brief class discussion focusing on the Heart Foundation. Use these questions as a guide:

What does the Heart Foundation do?
How does it help people?
What does donate mean?

Go further and ask:

What is a fundraiser?
Why fundraise?
Why is raising money important for the Heart Foundation?

Discuss how donations can be made as part of a fundraiser.

Clarify that a fundraiser is a special event designed to raise money through donations for causes such as the Heart Foundation. The funds are then used for research, equipment or programs to help the Heart Foundation continue its important work.

Step 2

Organise the student partners to pair up with another group to create a group of four. Encourage students to collaborate, working to decide on a message and to choose a format for their fundraising advertisement.

Formats might include:

Skipping jingle- with clapping, drumming
Role play- selling the positives of skipping
Skip / Dance routine to music- responding to music
Create a school mascot- Captain Heartbeat

Provide time for the students to work together and create a simple message to encourage others to participate. Remind students to use the elements discussed as part of advertising and visual media techniques, sounds, colours and images. Ask student groups to record their ideas on the Student Worksheets, for future use, leading up to the fundraising event.

Bring the students together and ask them to share their ideas in the class.

Reflection

Encourage students to provide feedback as a positive reflection, focusing on how the advertisement encouraged participation and inspired action to join the fundraiser.

Reflect on the student groups' fundraiser advertisements. Discuss which fundraiser advertisement made you feel like joining the fundraiser straight away? What were the reasons why? Reflect on the elements of advertising: slogan, rhyme, movement, etc.
