Lesson Summary
Students enhance their understanding of the techniques of persuasion used in spoken and written contexts of social action. They deepen their understanding of persuasive techniques by analysing and critiquing the use of these techniques in a famous speech about a social issue.
Learning intentions
Students will:
- know the features of persuasive speeches
- identify, analyse and critique the use of persuasive techniques in the National Apology to the Stolen Generations, delivered by former Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd, on February 13, 2008.
Success criteria
Students can:
- know a range of persuasive devices
- know how to manipulate language to present different perspectives and appeal to different audiences
- know that there are a range of perspectives on social issues
- work collaboratively
- analyse texts and apply understandings.
