Psychological safety

This lesson involves students reflecting on their behaviour, decision-making and how they respond to challenges. Some students may find it difficult to recognise when they have underused or overused a strength, or may feel sensitive discussing social situations such as conflict, exclusion or personal challenges.

To support psychological safety

emphasise that strengths can be used in different ways, and that underusing or overusing a strength is a normal part of learning
avoid asking students to share personal experiences unless they choose to do so
encourage students to speak in general terms when discussing scenarios (e.g. ‘someone might…’ rather than naming individuals)
reinforce that there are no right or wrong answers when applying strengths to situations
monitor student responses and be attentive to signs of discomfort or disengagement
provide the option for students to pass or contribute in alternative ways during discussions.

If issues arise that require follow-up, follow your school’s wellbeing and safeguarding procedures.

Cultural safety

Students may come from diverse cultural backgrounds where behaviours such as assertiveness, leadership, communication and emotional expression are viewed differently. This may influence how students interpret and apply strengths in different situations.

To support cultural safety

acknowledge that strengths can look different across peoples and contexts (e.g. quiet contribution, active listening, community-minded behaviour)
reinforce that there is no single ‘right’ way to respond to a situation
encourage students to respect different perspectives and approaches when discussing scenarios
be mindful that some students may be less comfortable speaking up, challenging others or sharing personal viewpoints
ensure that examples used in discussions are inclusive and avoid reinforcing stereotypes.

Frame strengths as diverse and equally valuable, and values as personal and shaped by individual experiences.
