Lesson Summary

Students will explore how moving water can be used to generate electricity through hydropower systems. They will investigate how hydropower works in Australia, including how turbines and generators transform energy and the roles people play in designing and managing these systems. To apply their learning, students will design and label a diagram of a hydropower system, including a STEM role that contributes to making it work effectively and sustainably.

Learning intentions

Students will:

  • understand how moving water can be used to generate electricity through hydropower systems
  • explore how hydropower systems are designed and used in Australia, including the roles people play in developing and managing them.

Success criteria

Students will:

  • outline how water movement is transformed into electrical energy using turbines, generators and circuits
  • design and label a diagram of a hydropower system that shows how electricity is generated and includes a related STEM role.
