Lesson summary

Students will explore factors contributing to identity, such as body image, sexuality, and representation. They will work collaboratively to learn about Australian athletes with lived experience on these topics while assessing the difference between supporting and detracting voices in sensitive discussions.

  • identify how Commonwealth Games athletes have been impacted by supporters and detractors

  • explain how identities can be influenced by people and places, and how we can create positive self-identities (AC9HP6P01)
  • apply strategies to manage emotions and analyse how emotional responses influence interactions (AC9HP6P06).

Relevant parts of Year 5 and 6 achievement standards: Students explain how different factors influence identities. Students propose strategies to manage emotions, developmental changes and transitions.  

General capabilities: Critical and Creative Thinking, Digital Literacy, Ethical Understanding, Literacy, Personal and Social Capability 

Cross-curriculum priority: Sustainability 

Level of teacher scaffolding: Medium - facilitate class discussion and ensure respectful communication when handling sensitive topics covered in this lesson.

The Australian Commonwealth Games Team are set to take on the athletes of he world at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games from next year, and together the more than 250 athletes in green and gold aim to be the top nation at the Games in terms of gold and overall medals won, the number of medallists, and the number of sports winning medals.
