Students explore the meaning of Pride through children's literature, discovering that stories can help us understand ourselves and others. Through shared reading, discussion and creative writing, students investigate themes of identity, belonging and acceptance, before responding to the story by sharing a proud moment from their own lives or writing to a character. The lesson encourages students to recognise Pride as both a celebration of the LGBTQIA+ community and a celebration of being yourself.
Students will:
understand that Pride is a celebration of identity, belonging and community for LGBTQIA+ people
make connections between a story and their own experiences of belonging and acceptance.
Students can:
explain what Pride means using ideas from the lesson
identify how the story shows belonging, acceptance or pride
respond to the story by making a thoughtful, personal or imaginative connection.
