Body Appreciation Dice - Activity Instructions

Activity description

What do we love about our bodies? This activity gives children an opportunity to develop fine-motor skills, with cutting, folding, and drawing as they make their own Body Appreciation Dice to celebrate all the things they love about their bodies. This is a ‘Take Action’ activity following on from reading Embrace Your Body, by Taryn Brumfitt.

Tune In

After reading ‘Embrace Your Body’, discuss what we are grateful for about our bodies and what we appreciate about them.

“Our bodies are all different and help us do lots of different things! When we ‘embrace’ our bodies, we are thanking our bodies and loving our bodies for all of the things our bodies allow us to do”

Give some examples of the things you appreciate about your body such as:

I appreciate my hands because they let me give all my favourite children high fives!
I love that my legs are so strong that they let me run around!

Find Out

Let’s talk about what our bodies can do. Direct the discussion towards specific body parts and ask children to move their bodies to demonstrate to each other the different things they can do.

What does your body help you do?
What do our arms help us do?
What can we do thanks to our legs?
What can our mouths help us do?

Role model showing appreciation for the various things we can do and gratitude for our bodies allowing us to do all of these actions. Identify that there are some things we can do that our peers may not be able to do yet, and vice versa. Discuss how we may be able to practise and be able to do something new, but also acknowledge that our bodies are all different and can therefore do different things.

Take Action

Using the template below, create an activity dice as a group identifying the different actions that can be achieved with the different parts of the body. As a group, roll the dice, following each instruction and celebrating what all of our bodies can do, despite all of our bodies looking different.

Invite children to create their own individual Activity Dice, allowing them to add actions that reflect their own interests and strengths.

By encouraging children to take their dice home, the conversation around embracing and appreciating our bodies for all they can do and achieve, rather than aesthetics, can continue at home.
