As a group, play the following “4 minute Self Love Positive Affirmations Meditation for Kids”

Ask children how they felt during the meditation. “How did saying those kind words to yourself make you feel?”

Ask the children to think about how their words can make others feel throughout the day. Encourage children to consider the power their words have on themselves and those around them, both positively and negatively.

“If saying these words to ourselves can make us feel a certain way, how can our words make others feel? If we are using kind words, how will our friends feel? What if we are using words that are not kind? How will our friends feel then?”

Find Out

Re-read ‘Charlie’s Tales: Cassia and the Fire Dragons’, highlighting situations where words could be impacting the way people feel.

“We are going to look out for times the characters are using their words to make themselves or others feel a certain way.”

For example:

Ruby saying, “But they’re bigger and stronger, and better at everything!” would make Ruby feel like she is little, weak, and not good at anything.
The dragon telling Charlie, “Careful, human”, would have Charlie feeling cared for.
Charlie saying, “Oh. Well, that’s okay, I’ll watch with you” would have Cassia feeling included.
The dragons cheering for Cassia when she froze the water would make her feel proud.
Grandma telling Ruby, “Your cousins might be fast, but you're a great climber, and you all have wonderful imaginations,” would have Ruby feeling capable.

Remind children of the power of words.

“See how the words we say to ourselves and to others can change the way we feel about ourselves, our bodies and the things we can do. We are going to practice using our words to make ourselves and others feel good.”

Take Action

Have children stand in a circle. Present them with the ‘Fireball’ (the soft ball with red, orange, and yellow streamers taped on to create a ‘tail’).

Explain the activity to the children:

“We are going to throw this fireball around the circle to our friends. Every time you catch the ball, you need to say something you really like about yourself or something that you are good at. Say a positive affirmation!”

As each child has their turn, you may ask them to sit down so it is easier to identify who has and hasn’t had a turn yet (make sure everyone gets a turn!).

When everyone has said a positive affirmation to themselves, you could do another round of saying positive things to someone else.

“This time, when we pass it to someone, we also need to use our words to make them feel good, proud and happy about themselves. You might say something that they are really good at or tell them how you feel when you are around them. When someone says something kind to you, you can also practice saying “Thank you” or let them know how that made you feel.”

As children start to get the hang of the game, it can be introduced daily as a morning routine or to conclude the day on a positive note.
