Car Colours - Activity Introduction

You could complete this activity when you go out for a walk or, if you live on a busy street, by looking out the window. Record the number of cars you see using a tally chart and then turn your results into a graph.

Step 1.

Next time you go out on a walk or drive, take a piece of paper and a pencil with you. Draw up a table on your sheet (or ask a parent or caregiver to help you) that looks like this:

Step 2.

As you walk along, look at the colour of the cars that are parked or that go by (you might want to choose just to only record parked or driving cars, or all of them). Notice what colour the car is. Write the colour in the first column and put a tally mark next to the colour under ‘number’. If you see another car of the same colour, put another mark. When you get to five, put a line through the first four lines like this:

Step 3.

If you see a different coloured car, write down its colour in your table and put a mark next to it. Keep track of all the cars you see on the walk and what colour they are. Don’t forget to put every fifth mark across the other four.

Step 4.

When you get home, count up the total number of cars of each colour you saw - does having the bundles arranged into five help? Can you count in fives to make your counting easier and quicker? Write the total as a number next to the colour.

Step 5.

Which colour car did you see the most? Which car did you see the least of? Are there any colours that you saw the same amount of?

Taking It Further

Count the colour of cars next time you go outside. Compare them with your other walk. Are they the same or different? Is the colour with the most/least the same or different? You could make a pictograph by drawing the cars in their colours.
