Indoor Hopscotch - Activity Instructions

Being stuck inside for winter shouldn’t restrict the games that you could play. Hopscotch isn’t just for outdoors. Let’s hop hop and hop along together and see who can keep their balance!

Safety advice: Hopping on one leg is difficult! Be careful to keep your balance. Don’t fall! Make sure you keep far away from tables and breakable objects.

Part A: Setting Up

Step 1.

Get the masking tape and mark out squares on the carpet or floor. To get good even measurements you can use a large book as a measuring guide for size. This will help keep the squares the same size. Measure three in a row, then two on top of that, one more, then two more as shown.

Step 2.

Mark out the numbers with masking tape. For the younger age group, prompt them to see which number is which as you go.

Part B: The Game

Step 1.

If your kid is very, very young they might not be able to hop down the line yet, in this case they can just jump down the line. When you get to the double square, put one foot in each square. When you get to the end of the line, jump, turn around and go back down the line! Practice this a few times.

Step 2.

When you are familiar with the pattern, take your throwing object and throw it into the hopscotch. Wherever it lands is a square you have to jump over!
