Vegetable stamps

This easy activity will create the perfect opportunity to play with your food! Take your favourite vegetables, put some paint on them and stamp them all over. This is a great one for the imagination. Experiment with different shapes and vegetables for different results.

Safety advice: Knives are sharp, pointy and dangerous. Parents/caregivers will need to cut the shapes into vegetables.

Try to use non-toxic, water-based paint.

Vegetables used for painting are not good for eating afterwards! Also, they will go mouldy eventually, so you might like to make new ones if that happens.

Part A: Prepare!

Step 1. Gather your items together. Using a chopping board, cut the vegetables in half so you can cut some shapes out. (This is a dangerous activity! Make sure to get an adult to do this for you.)

You could cut some simple shapes, like a square or a triangle, or a star if you feel up to it.

Step 2. Next, prepare your painting area. It’s a great outdoors activity but if doing this indoors, put down some newspaper or a plastic sheet. Put some water into a container for washing out your paintbrush.

Step 3. Put some paints onto the different lids/plates, one colour for each. You can mix primary colours together to make different colours, for example, mix red and yellow together and you will get orange!

Part B: Get Stamping

Step 1. There are two ways to get the paint onto the vegetables for stamping. The first is to take the paintbrush, dip it in the paint and paint the stamp area on the vegetable. The second is to dip the vegetable directly into the paint. The first is a little cleaner.

Step 2. Once your vegetable has paint on it, then you can press it onto some paper. Get stamping and make some fun patterns.

Step 3. Cleaning up time! Wash the paint off the lids/plates and the paintbrush so that they are clean for your next activity. Use cold water and rinse brushes until the water runs clear. If you leave paintbrushes with paint in them, they can go hard and will be ruined.

Taking it further

You can try stamping with objects found outside, like gumnuts. Let your imagination run wild!
