Tips for Parents and Carers

This is an exceptionally easy activity to do with your kid/s; it can be really fun to give them different shapes or vegetables to paint with.

It is not advisable to let your kid/s use sharp knives to carve the vegetables, so you will need to do this for them. Let them draw some designs for you or give you advice as you work.

Paint can get a little messy so it might be a good idea to take this activity outside or put down newspapers or a plastic sheet to keep it contained.

  • Cloth

  • Chopping board
  • Knife
  • Paint (non-toxic, water-based)
  • Paintbrush
  • Paper
  • Plates (you can use container lids)
  • Potatoes (or other vegetables if you prefer)
  • Water

Additional Info

Safety advice: Knives are sharp, pointy and dangerous. Parents/caregivers will need to cut the shapes into vegetables.

Try to use non-toxic, water-based paint.

Vegetables used for painting are not good for eating afterwards! Also, they will go mouldy eventually, so you might like to make new ones if that happens.

Young kids will need their parents/caregivers to help carve the vegetables, then they can get creative all on their own.
