Case Study
A case study is a detailed look at a real-life example to help us understand a topic better. In this lesson, students read about how specific communities in Australia have dealt with floods, such as the Martuwarra Fitzroy River community. These examples help us see how different people respond to and manage flooding events.
Ecosystem
An ecosystem is a community of living things, like plants and animals, and their environment, all interacting together. Floods are a natural part of some ecosystems in Australia, helping to bring water and nutrients to plants and animals in areas such as wetlands.
Flood
A flood is when too much water covers land that is usually dry. In Australia, floods can happen when a lot of rain falls in a short time or rivers overflow. Floods can cause damage, but they can also help the environment by providing water to dry areas.
Land Management
Land management means looking after land to keep it healthy and safe for people and the environment. This can include using traditional knowledge from First Nations peoples and modern scientific methods to prepare for and manage floods, like planning where to build houses or how to protect important places.
Traditional Custodians
Traditional Custodians are the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples who have cared for and managed the land for thousands of years. They use special knowledge and practices, called traditional land management, to look after the environment, including ways of dealing with floods.
