Songlines and Trade

Vocabulary

Name Class

Archaeological evidence

Archaeological evidence means the physical things, like tools, artwork or objects, that people from the past have left behind. For example, stone tools found in Australia help us learn about the cultural practices of First Nations peoples.

Country

Country, with a capital 'C', refers to the land, waters, skies, and everything living on them that are connected to a specific First Nations group. For example, the Traditional Custodians of your Country are the First Nations people whose ancestors have cared for that land for thousands of years.

Songlines

Songlines are pathways across the land that First Nations peoples use to pass down knowledge, stories and maps through songs, dance and oral tradition. For example, a songline might help someone travel from one area to another by singing about the directions and important landmarks along the way.

Trade

Trade is when people exchange items, such as goods, tools, or resources, usually because each group values what the other has. For example, different First Nations groups would meet to trade items like ochre, shells, or stone tools.

Tradition

Tradition means the beliefs, customs, and ways of doing things that are passed from one generation to the next. For First Nations peoples, traditions include sharing knowledge through storytelling, art, and ceremonies.
