Video transcript
Helen: Since were talking about literacy, what are we trying to do when we teach literacy?
Lyn: That is a huge loaded question and luckily I've got a bit of a loaded answer! Right so we'll start with the broad brush stroke. Literacy is the path to being able to function in a complex society. So with that comes all of the good things about that and personal freedom. So teaching children to read and also to write is a way of lifting their personal freedom, their choice, their life trajectory. So that's the huge picture.
How does it work?
Before recording the conversation with our education expert, we invite our teaching community to submit their burning questions about literacy. These questions included hot topics such as, ‘How do I choose a literacy program?’ and ‘Why are we in a literacy crisis?’
You will learn:
- What are we trying to do when we teach literacy?
- Why do we have a literacy crisis?
- What are the benefits of teaching phonics at a young age (and what are the pitfalls?)
- How do you choose a literacy program for your school?
- Is there value in teaching handwriting in the digital age?
