Course Summary
Families are integral to our school communities and, if things are going as they should, form a harmonious part of the decision-making process at the school as a whole and in the engagement of each of our students’ learning. However, we also know that sometimes this relationship is less than harmonious, and sometimes the greater community has a lot of things to say about how the school runs but a little less when asked if they read with their child at night. That is why we have looked at the many ways in which we can flip this script and ensure that as a teacher, no relationship with families, no matter how complicated, is put in the too-hard basket and strong relationships are built in the best interest of the student. We will look at communication strategies, conferences, cultural and language barriers and other hurdles that will seem less insurmountable by the end of this micro-professional learning course.
You will learn:
- ways to proactively involve parents and families
- communication strategies that are best applied to such relationships
- how to overcome many common barriers between families and schools, such as time, language and accessibility of information.
- culturally responsive practices that will improve communication with families
