Lesson summary
Students will engage with short texts and images about the Commonwealth Games and athletes. They use comprehension strategies of accessing prior knowledge, visualising, questioning and examining text structures. Students create a short text at the end of the lesson.
Learning intentions
Students will:
- explore short narratives in written and video form
- make lists of words used to encourage someone
- create signs to encourage athletes.
Success criteria
Students can:
- identify some of the text structures of a short informative text
- explain some ways that images and words combine to add meaning to a text
- create short texts with images or colours that add meaning.

Foundation English
Students can:
- understand that texts can take many forms, such as signs, books and digital texts (AC9EFLA03)
- explore the contribution of images and words to meaning in stories and informative texts (AC9EFLA07)
- respond to stories and share feelings and thoughts about their events and characters (AC9EFLE02).
Relevant parts of Foundation achievement standards: Students listen to texts, interact with others and create short spoken texts, including retelling stories. Students retell, report information and state their thoughts, feelings and key ideas. They use words and phrases from learning and texts.
- comprehends independently read texts using background knowledge, word knowledge and understanding of how sentences connect (ENE-RECOM-01)
- creates written texts that include at least 2 related ideas and correct simple sentences (ENE-CWT-01).
General capabilities: Critical and Creative Thinking, Literacy
Level of teacher scaffolding: Medium – facilitate class discussion and support students to create their posters.
