Lesson summary

Students will explore past, present and future tenses of verbs by examining Commonwealth Games commentary and writing a sporting commentary of their own.

Learning intentions

Students will:

  • learn about verbs and verb tenses used in the context of the Commonwealth Games
  • explore sports commentary, including its purpose and the conventions of language used in sports commentary.

Success criteria

Students can:

  • identify examples of verbs in past, present and future tense in sports commentary
  • apply correct verb tense in creating and delivering spoken text
  • write a short sports commentary script for a Commonwealth Games event.

Year 3 English

Students can:

  • understand how verbs represent different processes for doing, feeling, thinking, saying and relating (AC9E3LA07)
  • understand that verbs are anchored in time through tense (AC9E3LA08).

Year 4 English 

Students can:

  • understand how adverb groups/phrases and prepositional phrases work in different ways to provide circumstantial details about an activity (AC9E4LA08)
  • understand past, present and future tenses and their impact on meaning in a sentence (AC9E4LA09).  

Relevant parts of Year 3 English achievement standards: Students describe the language features of texts, including topic-specific vocabulary and literary devices, and how visual features extend meaning. 

Relevant parts of Year 4 English achievement standards: Students describe how ideas are developed through characters and events, and how texts reflect contexts,and describe how language features including literary devices, and visual features shape meaning. 

General capabilities: Critical and Creative Thinking, Literacy

Level of teacher scaffolding: Medium – facilitate class discussion and lead explicit teaching about verb tenses.

The Australian Commonwealth Games Team are set to take on the athletes of he world at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games from next year, and together the more than 250 athletes in green and gold aim to be the top nation at the Games in terms of gold and overall medals won, the number of medallists, and the number of sports winning medals.
