Lesson summary

Students will explore continuity and change in aspects of their daily lives compared to their parents' and grandparents' childhoods by examining various games and sports. They will investigate the sports played at the Commonwealth Games and how some have evolved over the years, as well as traditional games played at home. Students will create a list of basic questions to interview a family member about these topics, making important connections between classroom learning and their everyday lives.

Learning intentions

Students will:

  • understand that many generations have played lots of different sports
  • use the Commonwealth Games as an example of how some sports have changed and some have stayed the same.

Success criteria

Students can:

  • explain why some sports have been played for a very long time
  • develop questions about playing common sports.

General capabilities: Intercultural Understanding, Literacy

Level of teacher scaffolding: Low – the teacher will need to confidently facilitate class discussion and encourage students to complete a home-based task.

The Australian Commonwealth Games Team are set to take on the athletes of he world at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games from next year, and together the more than 250 athletes in green and gold aim to be the top nation at the Games in terms of gold and overall medals won, the number of medallists, and the number of sports winning medals.
