Lesson summary

Students will investigate a range of Commonwealth countries to learn about the lives and cultures of people around the world, including food, fashion, festivals and famous sites. They will use their research to reflect on and explore how limited knowledge and experiences of a place can lead to oversimplification and/or stereotyping, and identify how to avoid misconceptions.

Learning intentions

Students will:

  • explore some basic information about Commonwealth nations
  • develop greater awareness about stereotypes 
  • investigate other ways to find more unique information about some nations.

Success criteria

Students can:

  • explain what a stereotype is and how to avoid misconceptions
  • recognise the diversity across and within nations, including those in the Commonwealth.

Relevant parts of Year 6 HASS achievement standards: Students explain the geographical diversity of places and the effects of interconnections with other countries. 

General capabilities: Critical and Creative Thinking, Intercultural Understanding, Literacy

Level of teacher scaffolding: Low - the teacher will need to confidently facilitate class discussion and group work.
