Lesson Summary
Students will analyse an artwork created by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artist Chern'ee Sutton to explore how patterns, symbols and icons are combined to communicate meaning in visual arts. They will discover how the artist has represented Commonwealth Games Australia’s sporting history using a range of visual elements significant to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. Students will draw on visual elements to inform and inspire their own creative designs for the Commonwealth Games Australian Team.
Learning intentions
Students will:
- explore Chern'ee Sutton's artwork created for Commonwealth Games Australia.
Success criteria
Students can:
- identify themes, elements and concepts woven into Chern'ee Sutton's artwork
- discuss the importance of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander representation and visibility through artwork
- create their own design for the Australian Commonwealth Games Team.
