Lesson Summary
Students will learn about how communities in Australia manage severe weather events, particularly cyclones. They will consider how design can improve safety and resilience, by analysing survivor accounts, comparing historical cyclone data, and designing a blueprint for a cyclone-resilient home.
Learning intentions
Students will:
- understand and compare the impact of major cyclones on communities in Darwin and the Whitsunday coast
- identify features that make homes more resilient to cyclonic weather
Success criteria
Students can:
- describe how people responded in past cyclone events
- design a house and explain why particular features were included in their house design to improve its resilience to cyclones
