Lesson preparation:

Read through this lesson before deciding when you want to run it.

You may wish to give students an opportunity to complete parts of this lesson or any extension activities from the Bingo Sheet before completing Part C of this lesson.

You might decide to conduct this entire lesson as a ‘celebration’ of completing the Volkswagen Footy Fit Challenge unit. If so, think about inviting students to bring a healthy snack to share for morning tea.

If you decide to use this lesson to celebrate your students’ achievements coming to the close of the Volkswagen Footy Fit Challenge unit, you will need to review students’ Stadium Scoreboards and select your class's Team Roles based on the Volkswagen Footy Fit Challenge Scoring Framework (see teacher content information) and how many tokens students have collected individually. Select a Participation or Completion Certificate for each student based on their achievements and print, sign and fill in any team roles awarded. If any students have achieved a full Stadium Scoreboard (40 tokens), they qualify for a Rising Star Award.

Introduction

Step 1.

Explain to students that this lesson is focused on Healthy Mindset. If your students are collecting Volkswagen Footy Fit Challenge Tokens, inform them that they can collect Healthy Mindset tokens by completing the activities in this lesson. There will also be some extension activities they can complete for extra tokens. They can refer to the Volkswagen Footy Fit Challenge Game Plan for more information.

Part A: Diversity Chairs

Step 1

Students arrange chairs in a circle. This activity is easier with chairs as placeholders, rather than standing in space. Remove your own chair and stand in the middle of the circle. Make a statement, such as “I have a pet cat”. Everyone who has a pet cat must stand up and swap chairs. The person left standing makes a new statement and students swap chairs again if it is true for them.

Step 2

Encourage students to make statements about their personal culture and background, such as “I celebrate Hanukkah”.

Step 3

Encourage students to make statements they believe about themselves, such as “I’m proud of how hard I’m training for footy”.

Step 4

End the game and bring the extra chair back into the circle so that everyone is seated. Discuss how there is a lot of diversity even within just the classroom, which creates an interesting social culture. Lead a discussion on the benefits to having diversity and its impact on the community. You might like to use these questions as prompts:

What examples of different cultures have we encountered?
Do we like a certain food?
Do we speak or learn a language other than English?
Do we participate in any celebrations such as Chinese New Year?
What would the world be like if everyone was exactly the same, ate the same food, enjoyed the same things, etc.?
What are some positives about having different cultures as a part of our society?
Do they make us think in different ways?
Can we enjoy different things we wouldn’t otherwise be exposed to?
Think about a footy team (or another team). People with all sorts of different skills and physical makeups come together to work as a unit. But what would happen if we asked a ruckman to defend a small forward or instructed a netball goal defence to shoot goals?
Think about our class. Everyone has different experiences and perspectives that they can share. This makes the class stronger as a group than one person working on their own.

Step 5

Stay sitting in a circle. Invite students, one by one, to say something positive about themselves and also about the person to their left. For example, “I help my mum around the house” and “I like how Jimmy is always upbeat in class”.

Award one Healthy Mindset token upon successful completion.

Part B: Diverse Strengths

Step 1

Invite students to return to their Avatar Worksheet from Footy Fit - Your Footy Fit Challenge - HPE - Years 3-6, or alternatively, draw a picture of themselves in the centre of the page as a superhero. Let the students know these sheets will be shared with other members of the class. This gives them the opportunity to be selective about the information they share and not put them in a vulnerable position later.

Step 2

On the left of the character, have students list five of their personal strengths, such as 'maths' or 'fast runner'.

Step 3

On the right of the character, have students identify three to five areas of personal gain that they are committed to improving. It’s best if students identify their own areas of improvement rather than using teacher-assigned learning goals so that they are more committed to working on these areas.

Step 4

Gather the completed sheets and redistribute so that students have someone else’s sheet. Tell students they should not tell others whose sheet they have as they will be required to guess. You can invite students to partner up, or you can play as a whole class.

Students then take turns to give personality clues about the person they’ve been assigned. These clues can come from the sheet or can be invented by the player based on their personal knowledge of the person. For example, “My person is really strong at maths, and is a great runner”, rather than, “My person has black hair”. Their partner tries to guess whose character sheet they are holding. Play multiple rounds, with students switching partners.

Step 5

Regather the sheets and display them on a table where everyone can reference them. Supply students with a class list or the Student Worksheet. Explain to students that they will be creating a 'Personal Decathlon' for their peers. You can have them work individually or in small groups. Explain that the event they choose for each of their peers should be something that the person will excel at and easily win the gold medal in, given their personal strength.

Pick names out of a hat/jar to ensure ALL students will be having a Personal Decathlon designed for them and no one is left out. Alternatively, you could have students pick a partner and they design the Personal Decathlon for each other.

Safety first: You might like to check over the tasks before handing them over to the nominee to ensure tasks are within their range of abilities and will not make them feel vulnerable.

Award one Healthy Mindset token to each student who completes their Personal Decathlon.

Award one token to each student/group member who designs a well-thought-out Personal Decathlon that focuses on the individual’s strengths.

If you notice any students shouting encouragement or being supportive of others, you might choose to award them an additional Healthy Mindset token.

Learning support: Allow students to perform their Personal Decathlon to one or two peers rather than the whole class.

Part C: Celebrate The Team

Note: You may wish to delay Part C until students have had the opportunity to complete any additional tasks from the Volkswagen Footy Fit Challenge Game Plan and added remaining points to their Stadium Scoreboard.

This would also be a good time to complete the follow-up session on the Draft Combine Fitness Worksheet in Footy Fit - How Do I Get Fit? - HPE - Years 3-6 and compare results from the start of the program to the end of the program. Students earn a Physical Skills token upon completion.

Step 1

Explain to students that they have reached the end of the Volkswagen Footy Fit Challenge program.

To celebrate you might like to hold a healthy morning tea, where students can make delicious and nutritious snacks to share with each other (e.g. bliss balls, hummus and veggies, bruschetta).

Step 2

Collect all completed Stadium Scoreboards and consider the overall tally of points, including the breakdown of points in each of the sections:

* You could instead negotiate individual targets for students who have special needs and allow all students to be awarded Fan Club Membership regardless of tokens earned, or allow all students to be awarded a Certificate of Completion. You could also choose to add or remove some activities from your in-class program and change the minimum requirements to suit your students.

** You could instead allow all students who receive a Certificate of Completion, but don’t qualify for the more challenging roles, to be awarded Player status.
*** Students must also qualify for a Certificate of Completion to be awarded this role.

Step 4

Fill in the student names on the Volkswagen Footy Fit Team Roles sheet.

Step 5

Prior to distributing the Certificates, remind students of the Sydney Swans Support Team Chart from the first lesson, Footy Fit - Your Footy Fit Challenge - HPE - Years 3-6, and display this for them. Remind them that the way they chose to collect points will have determined their role in the class Volkswagen Footy Fit Team.

Gather your students together to announce the team roles and award certificates. If any students didn’t reach the required points, you can award them a Certificate of Participation for completing the unit.

Step 6

Invite students to participate in a small celebration (or morning tea) and discuss their achievements and learnings.

Reflection

Invite students to consider:

What are three actions I can take to improve or assist my community, based on my personal strengths?
Who might be able to help me improve or complement my areas of weakness when undertaking these actions?

For example:

Maths: Offer to help teach my friends during maths
Friendly: Play with some younger students during recess
Creative: Build a bird box for the local park.

Differentiated Learning

Extension

Watch Roger Federer and Andy Lee play "Guess Whom”. Create a “Guess Whom” style boardgame using photos or cartoons of your classmates (with permission). Stick to personality-based questions rather than appearance-based ones for an extra challenge. Students can earn one Healthy Mindset token by completing this task.
Write a persuasive letter to the coach of the Sydney Swans identifying your key strengths, and how you contribute to your class, school and wider community as reasons for why you should be drafted. Students can earn one Healthy Mindset token by completing this task.
Learn a dance or song from a different culture. Using a green screen, make a recording as if you were performing at the AFL Grand Final. Students can earn one Healthy Mindset token by completing this task.
Learn a sport from a different culture and teach your class. Students can earn one Healthy Mindset token by completing this task.

Provisions for Learning Support

Allow students to perform their Personal Decathlon to one or two peers rather than the whole class.
Part C: Celebration - some students may not be able to achieve more than 15-20 points. Use your discretion and knowledge of the students' capabilities when awarding Certificates of Completion and Certificates of Participation.
