Lesson summary

Ever wondered why we can’t just eat cookies all day, every day? This lesson explores the nutrients we source from different foods to fulfil the various needs of the human body.

Students will gain an understanding of how carbohydrates and other sugars affect their energy levels, investigate the particular use their bodies have for protein and other nutrients and plan a well-rounded lunch box that caters to their body’s nutrient needs.

The health and fitness-related tasks undertaken throughout the Volkswagen Footy Fit Challenge lessons are gamified, providing incentivised learning opportunities and allowing for some personalisation. Therefore, we recommend students complete the full Volkswagen Footy Fit Challenge unit to benefit from the full experience, completing this lesson first.

Learning intentions:

Students will...

  • understand the different types of nutrients provided by different foods and how they are used by the body in different ways
  • identify which foods contain which nutrients
  • identify health and wellbeing challenges around food in their own lives.

Success criteria:

Students can...

  • demonstrate the difference between slow release and quick release sugars on energy levels
  • determine through research the different sources of nutrients in foods
  • determine through research the different uses of nutrients in the body
  • create a balanced meal plan.
