A Patchwork Of Dignity - Activity Instructions

Patchwork quilts are often used to tell stories. For example, sometimes fabric has come from a piece of treasured clothing, and sometimes squares are added with a special message from a friend or family member. Even though each patch is different, they come together to make a quilt of warmth and protection. In this task, you will create a drawing of a patchwork quilt of dignity, telling the story of how everyone has the right to be treated with dignity, regardless of the choices they have made.

Who Should Be Treated With Dignity?

Step 1.

Read these statements:

I have dignity	My best friend has dignity	My parents have dignity	A person who has done something mean to me has dignity
Movie stars have dignity	Refugees have dignity	A person who has been mean to my family has dignity	Everyone in the world has dignity

Step 2.

Read the Dignity Definition factsheet and, using what you learn from reading, explain why these statements are true.

Step 3.

Rule your piece of paper into even-sized ‘patches’. You’ll need to do some measuring to do this! Get out your ruler and fill in the dimensions below.

Step 4.

In each patch you’ve ruled, write one of the statements from Step 1. Illustrate it with a picture that best demonstrates its meaning to you. Display your finished artwork somewhere where it will remind you that everyone deserves dignity.

Step 5.

Write a story that imagines someone else’s perspective and why they deserve dignity. You might like to get inspiration from an advertisement on TV, a magazine or the newspaper.
