A Treasure Tour - Activity Instructions

You might think a treasure map just shows you where to find buried gold, but have you ever thought that there might be treasure all around you? Nature provides us with so many useful, beautiful things that are still valuable. What do you treasure in nature? Think about the smell of flowers, the sound of birds or rain falling, or the sight of dew drops in the morning. In this activity, you will create your own ‘natural treasures’ map.

Part A: Finding Treasure

Step 1.

Spend at least five minutes in your garden, by yourself if possible. Notice the natural features in your garden. Where do you have trees, or flowers? Where is a great place to play, or read a book? Focus on the things you can hear, feel and smell as well as what you can see. Add these to your Observation Sheet by writing or drawing.

Step 2

Find a comfy spot, ideally still outside (but inside is fine if the weather is yuck!). Look at your Observation Sheet, and put a circle around the things that are most valuable to you.

Part B: Mapping The Treasure

Step 1.

On your My Treasure Map Worksheet, draw the outline of your garden. This will be your map.

Step 2.

Maps are drawn from a ‘birds-eye view’. This means it is like we are looking down from the sky. They also use simple 2D shapes to represent the items, instead of a detailed picture. On your worksheet, plot the valuable natural features you chose, making sure they are in the right position. Don’t forget to label the features you have chosen!

Taking It Further

Imagine you are a tour guide leading a visitor on a treasure hunt. If there is someone at home with you, ask if they can join you. Fill in the Map Directions Worksheet. You will need to use clear, specific instructions to make sure your visitor finds the treasure you are thinking of.
Some plants are valuable as food and medicines too. Research a plant that grows in your area which has been used for these purposes.
