Angles Above - Activity Instructions

Learning outside means limitless opportunities for imagination, inspiration, curiosity and creative thinking. Kids need to keep asking ‘why’, ‘how come’ and ‘what if’. There is no better source of questions and possibilities than investigating your natural and built environment.

Part A: Identifying Types Of Angles And Their Features

Step 1.

Before you can head outside to look for angles, it will be useful to refresh your knowledge of angles. You can do this by having a go at identifying, naming and describing the different types of angles and their features using the Types of Angles – Worksheet. Use a protractor to measure and label the angles you create.

You can check your answers with the Types of Angles – Examples (or get your parent/caregiver to check for you). Make any necessary corrections and spend some time ensuring you have good knowledge of the different types of angles included in the worksheet.

Part B: Angle Hunt In The Outdoors

Step 1.

Get ready to head outside. Firstly you will need to prepare your materials. Make sure you’ve got a pen/pencil and the Finding Angles – Worksheet, to record your angle data. You’ll also need your completed Types of Angles – Worksheet to help you identify the angles you see. You will also need a small hand mirror.

Step 2.

In an outdoor location, preferably beneath a tree or within a yard, use your completed angles worksheet from Part A to begin identifying any angles that you see.

Step 3.

Sit up and rotate your body around 360 degrees to identify other angles in your environment.

Step 4.

Use your small mirror placed on the tip of your nose to view the world looking straight up above you. Then keeping your eyes on the mirror identify overhead tree branches or human made structures. Try to go for a walk, balancing as you progress on the edge of a tricky angle one step at a time.

Step 5.

Think about how it felt walking along those tricky angles. Were some angles easier to walk along than others? Could you name any of those angles?

Step 6.

Using the Finding Angles - Worksheet, search the outdoor environment to correctly identify and draw the angle. Next to each diagram add instructions to help others find the location of your angle.

Step 7.

If you are interested in closely observing the environment for angles, try using a magnifying glass and laying on your stomach to spot angles in the garden and grass. You could also repeat the observations for angles using a pair of binoculars.

Taking It Further

Choose one of the following human structures and/or objects:

building
bridge
road
sports car
push bike
airplanes
surfboard
paper airplane
drone.

Use books, magazines or the internet to find images of any of these objects. Make a collection of images.

Select one of the human structures and/or objects and find out why it was designed with the particular angles used. Label the different angles that you observe on your chosen image.

Alternatively, you could research natural structures and/or living things such as:

petals on a sunflower
a beehive, spider web
the arrangement of leaves on a palm
veins on a leaf
a crystal
waves.
