Lesson summary
Students will create a dance to represent important aspects of their community. They will consider how elements of dance such as colour, costume, movement and sound can help convey a message about the people, location and values of the community they live in. Students will share their dance with others to communicate their ideas and experience the joy of performing to an audience.

Foundation Media Arts
Students learn to create arts works that communicate ideas (AC9AMAFC01).
Year 1 and 2 Dance
- Students learn to use the elements of dance to choreograph dance sequences (AC9ADA2C01).
Relevant parts of Foundation Media Arts achievement standards: Students use play, imagination, arts knowledge, processes and/or skills to create and share arts works in different forms.
Relevant parts of Year 1 and 2 Dance achievement standards: Students use the elements of dance to structure dance sequences.
NSW Syllabus outcomes: VAES1.1, DAS1.2
General capabilities: Critical and Creative Thinking, Intercultural Understanding
Cross-curriculum priority: Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Histories and Cultures.
Level of teacher scaffolding: High – the teacher will need to confidently facilitate class discussions, group work and support students to perform a dance to their community.
