Lesson summary

Students explore which sports in the Commonwealth Games include striking skills. They will investigate different striking techniques and record their data. Students will practise their skills and use their data representation skills to track their progress. This is a split lesson, with the ‘Tune In’ and ‘Find Out’ phases happening first.

Learning intentions

Students will:

  • practise fundamental striking movements across a range of sports.

Success criteria

Students can:

  • apply striking skills in different scenarios
  • record and represent 1-to-1 data.

Australian Curriculum (v9.0) content description: 

Year 1 Health and Physical Education

Students can:

  • practice fundamental movement skills and apply them in a variety of movement situations (AC9HP2M01).

Year 1 Mathematics

Students can:

  • represent collected data for a categorical variable using one-to-one displays and digital tools where appropriate; compare the data using frequencies and discuss the findings (AC9M1ST02)
  • acquire and record data for categorical variables in various ways including using digital tools, objects, images, drawings, lists, tally marks and symbols (AC9M1ST01).

Relevant parts of Year 1 Health and Physical Education achievement standards: Students apply fundamental movement skills in different situations and explain how they move effectively with objects and in space. They also develop and apply rules while collaborating with others in a range of movement contexts.

Relevant parts of Year 1 Mathematics achievement standards: Students collect and record categorical data, create one-to-one displays, and compare and discuss the data using frequencies. 

General capabilities: Critical and Creative Thinking, Numeracy, Personal and Social Capability

Level of teacher scaffolding: Medium - facilitate class discussion and supervise physical activities.
