Lesson summary

Students will learn about Commonwealth Games volunteers and explore how people with shared beliefs and values work together to achieve a civic goal. They will investigate common values, beliefs, motivations and benefits of volunteering. Students will then apply their learning by researching local volunteer groups and finding a creative way to celebrate members of their community.

Learning intentions

Students will:

  • learn about Commonwealth Games volunteers and their contributions by identifying some of the common values, beliefs, motivations and benefits of volunteering.

Success criteria

Students can:

  • discuss why people choose to volunteer
  • acknowledge and celebrate the work of volunteers.

Students learn about how citizens (members of communities) with shared beliefs and values work together to achieve a civic goal (AC9HS5K07).

Relevant parts of Year 5 HASS achievement standards: Students explain the key values and features of Australia’s democracy and how people achieve civic goals. 

General capabilities: Critical and Creative Thinking, Literacy, Personal and Social Capability 

Cross-curriculum priority: Sustainability 

Level of teacher scaffolding: Low – the teacher will need to confidently facilitate class discussion and encourage students to complete a creative task.

UN SDG 4: Ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all

The Australian Commonwealth Games Team are set to take on the athletes of he world at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games from next year, and together the more than 250 athletes in green and gold aim to be the top nation at the Games in terms of gold and overall medals won, the number of medallists, and the number of sports winning medals.
