Lesson summary

In this lesson, students explore how to value diversity and show respect, empathy and inclusion in their community. They will investigate images of different types of religious dress to learn about diverse cultural and faith expressions, and watch videos where people explain what their clothing means to them. Using empathy maps, students will step into others’ shoes to better understand different perspectives and feelings. To put their learning into action, students will create welcoming messages that promote respect and inclusion for people of all backgrounds in their school community.

Learning intentions

Students will:

  • practise empathy when learning about different forms of religious dress
  • explore how clothing can be part of someone’s identity and sense of belonging.

Success criteria

Students can:

  • can explain how clothing, including religious dress, is connected to a person’s identity and sense of belonging
  • can design a message, symbol or action that promotes inclusion and respect for diversity in their school community.
