Lesson summary

Students will explore and identify environmental factors that impact physical activity, and barriers to participating in physical activity, by exploring case studies of Australian Commonwealth Games athletes. Students will work collaboratively to plan a strategy to participate in a sport of their choice.

Learning intentions

Students will:

  • explore environmental factors that might prevent them from being physically active.

Success criteria

Students can:

  • identify environmental barriers to participating in physical activity
  • create and implement strategies to increase participation in physical activity.

Year 3 and 4, Health and Physical Education

Students can:

  • participate in physical activities in natural and outdoor settings to examine factors that can influence their own and others’ participation (AC9HP4M05)
  • apply rules and scoring systems to promote fair play when participating or designing physical activities (AC9HP4M08).

Relevant parts of Year 3 and 4 achievement standards: Students examine factors that influence participation and propose strategies to incorporate regular physical activity into their own and others’ lives. They demonstrate fair play and inclusion through a range of roles in movement contexts.

General capabilities: Critical and Creative Thinking, Ethical Understanding, Intercultural Understanding, Literacy, Personal and Social Capability 

Cross-curriculum priority: Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Histories and Cultures, Sustainability 

Level of teacher scaffolding: Medium - facilitate class discussion and guide students to work collaboratively.

The Australian Commonwealth Games Team are set to take on the athletes of he world at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games from next year, and together the more than 250 athletes in green and gold aim to be the top nation at the Games in terms of gold and overall medals won, the number of medallists, and the number of sports winning medals.
