This unit of lessons focuses on exploring classification systems, ecosystems, and the importance of insects. Students will learn about dichotomous keys, scientific and common names, and the hierarchical system of classification. They will also study trophic levels, food chains, and interactions between species. Additionally, they will conduct a schoolyard Bush Blitz to find and draw pictures of insects and plants, and learn ways to attract insects. The unit will culminate in students writing a letter proposing insect attracting initiatives to school management. This unit uses the species discovered through the Bush Blitz program to inspire and engage students.
