Beyond the Bushfires - Bushfire-Resistant Housing

SecondaryYear 7 - 8EnglishHumanities and Social SciencesGeographyCivics and CitizenshipThe ArtsTechnologyDesign and TechnologiesEnvironmentalSustainability

The 2019-20 bushfire season destroyed over 2,500 homes, and as communities rebuild, there is a need to create buildings that are more fire-resistant. This set of resources challenges students to create practical solutions that improve people's lives by using the Design Process. The lessons scaffold students through engaging with communities affected by bushfires, defining the problems posed by building in such areas, researching solutions, and designing bushfire-resistant housing. The lessons are part of the Beyond the Bushfires series that brings the words of scientists who are actively involved in research and science communication into classrooms all over Australia.
