These resources are part of our The Final Quarter Curriculum Resources, created in collaboration with Shark Island Productions, the Australian Human Rights Commission, Reconciliation Australia, Narragunnawali and The Final Quarter.
This unit for Years 9 & 10, Racism, Rights and Reconciliation, uses the impactful story of AFL star Adam Goodes as depicted in The Final Quarter to explore deep themes related to
- understanding racism using historical and contemporary examples within Australian society
- examining the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples and exploring Australian examples of where they have been upheld, denied, restricted or disrespected
- discussing reconciliation and constitutional recognition efforts in Australia and exploring reconciliation processes through the lens of the Uluru Statement from the Heart and the RECOGNISE campaign
- evaluating media portrayals and personal narratives to understand institutional and direct forms of racism
- analysing the role of historical events in shaping attitudes towards Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures and histories
- promoting critical reflection on the legacy of Adam Goodes and the broader societal implications of his experiences
- encouraging students to engage with social action projects to deepen their understanding of cultural respect and community engagement
- fostering discussions on equity, human rights and the steps needed to achieve true reconciliation and societal change in Australia.
