Identity Jersey - Activity Instructions

Tune In

Take a picture walk through ‘Charlie’s Tales: Peggy and the Fantastic Football’. Prompt children to think about why each of the football players are wearing what they are wearing. For example:

shorts and singlets so they don’t get too hot running around
shoes to protect their feet when they kick the ball and so they don’t slide on the slippery grass
football jersey so they know who is on which team.

Show children the picture of Charlie on the first page. Ask children, “How is Charlie feeling?” (happy, excited, proud). “She looks very proud to be wearing her team’s uniform. When she is wearing this uniform, she feels like she is part of a team and community that all work together and help each other.”

Find Out

Ask children to share some other teams they know of and show examples of their team colours/jerseys to the group. Be sure to include jerseys from local teams that children may be involved in through family connections.

Discuss the elements of the jersey and what they might represent. Some examples could include:

Australia’s Green and Gold Olympic uniform which represents Australia’s floral emblem, the wattle.
AFL Indigenous round jumpers: the representation of the Australian Indigenous communities/players, showcasing Indigenous artists.
The inclusion of mascots. For example, Bulldogs, Sharks, Demons, Hurricanes, and what attributes they represent.

Take Action

Invite children to create their very own team jersey using the attached template, allowing full creative freedom. Before they begin, ask them to think about the following prompts:

Will your team have a name?
How do you want people to feel when they are on your team, wearing the uniform you create?
What colours will you use? Why?
Will you include any pictures/animals? Why did you choose that animal?

Provide plenty of resources that children can use, including paint, collage, textas, paint pens, biodegradable glitter, and natural materials, to create jerseys as unique as them and their vision for their team.

“I used all of the colours so that the whole team's favourite colour is on there, and I did a dog because my dog is friendly and likes playing with everyone”

Upon completion, assist the children in cutting out their jersey and backing onto coloured card to display in the room. Have the children dictate their reasoning behind their choices in colour, mascots, and emblems and write a blurb to go with each jersey, highlighting the meaning behind their design.
