Lesson summary

In this lesson students will create artworks inspired by their environment. By first analysing various techniques presented by contemporary artist, Don Colley, students learn how to draw inspiration from an outdoor setting. They then create an artwork based on various outdoor areas around your school.

Learning intentions:

  • analyse how artists draw inspiration from their environment and utilise this understanding in their own art making
  • use a range of drawing techniques to create works as a commentary on an important issue of their choosing.

  • analyse an artist's practice for their ability to communicate a message by drawing directly from their environment
  • choose and utilise appropriate art making techniques in their practice
  • draw on an existing artwork as inspiration in their art making practice.

Level of teacher scaffolding: Medium – seek relevant material for art making prior to the lesson and facilitate class discussions.

Resources required

  • Student Worksheets – one copy per student
  • Device capable of presenting a video to the class
  • Device capable of creating audio-visual recordings, such as an iPad or camera
  • A range of natural materials for students to sketch
  • A class set of lead pencils and Pitt Artist Pens (Calligraphy Brush Pens are a great alternative artist’s tool for this activity)
