The Bright Beginnings on Country project, aligned with the Early Years Learning Framework, supports children aged 3-5 to explore foundational mathematics through a First Nations lens, where numbers, patterns and measurement connect to language, land and story. Across ten rich, play-based lessons, children count, create, measure, and share using nature, movement and storytelling to build curiosity, confidence and cultural understanding. This unit nurtures early numeracy through connection to Country, family and community, helping preschool-aged children enter primary school with strong foundations for learning success and a deep appreciation of how knowledge, identity and environment are beautifully interwoven.

Find Out
Children learn mathematics through play, story, and movement. They sort, measure and share using natural objects and cultural stories. Each activity strengthens counting, patterning and problem‑solving. Children explore fairness, sequencing and space while connecting maths to Country, community and daily life. Learning becomes active, joyful and deeply meaningful.

Take Action
Children build number sense and belonging through hands-on exploration. Using natural materials and Yolŋu-inspired counting, they learn how sharing, care, and fairness guide mathematical thinking and community life, discovering that every person, animal and place has a role in keeping balance and connection strong on Country.
