This F-2 Geography (HASS) unit empowers young students to explore the vital role of light and darkness in the natural world. Through interactive activities, students will learn how artificial light impacts local wildlife and discover how to take simple steps to reduce light pollution in their communities.
In this unit, students will investigate how animals in their local area are affected by artificial light, explore the importance of natural light and darkness, and understand the significance of preserving these patterns for the health of the environment. Students will then create communication pieces based on their research, identify sources of light pollution in their surroundings, and develop strategies to reduce this light for the benefit of nocturnal animals.
By the end of the unit, students will understand the effects of light pollution, appreciate the balance between light and darkness, and be inspired to take action in their community to protect local habitats.
This unit was created in collaboration with The Biodiversity Council. Special thanks to our content partner, The Conversation and to The Garry White Foundation, The Hugh D. T. Williamson Foundation, Wedgetail and The James Kirby Foundation for their generous financial support.
