This unit is designed to help students learn about waste reduction and sustainability through a variety of lessons and activities. Students will explore topics such as the Australasian Recycling Label scheme, the waste hierarchy, chemical changes in raw materials, paper recycling, conflict minerals, consumer habits, artwork using rubbish, recycling and contamination data analysis, properties of beverage containers, and the properties and uses of aluminium. Through collaborative work and independent research, students will develop a deeper understanding of the impact of waste and the importance of sustainability. This unit is suitable for students in Years 7-10 and includes a flipped classroom approach to maximize class time for hands-on work.
