Tooth decay is said to be the most common childhood disease in Australia and can cause pain and infection. In extreme cases, it can lead to hospitalisation. Statistics about oral health in Australia tell us that 1 in 4 kids aged 5 to 10 have untreated decay in their baby teeth and that 1 in 25 people aged 15 and over have no natural teeth left (source). However, tooth decay is a largely preventable issue. By looking after our teeth through regular brushing, flossing and avoiding sugary foods and drinks, we can take big steps to better oral health. The final piece of the oral health puzzle is to regularly visit the dentist; in Australia, 3 in 10 people put off visiting a dentist because of the cost (source). This is where Smile Squad steps in: Smile Squad is a Victorian Government program that provides free dental services to students at school during school hours, including any general treatment that is required. These lessons support teachers to share and interrogate oral health messages and strategies with their students. Find out more about Smile Squad and the services they provide to Victorian Government Schools here.
