These resources are part of our The Final Quarter Curriculum Resources, created in collaboration with Shark Island Productions, the Australian Human Rights Commission, Reconciliation Australia, Narragunnawali and The Final Quarter.
This unit for Years 5 to 12, Building Respect, uses the powerful narrative of AFL star Adam Goodes as depicted in The Final Quarter to
- explore how relationships and commitment to the community are key in building trust and safety within a community and, reciprocally, that trust and safety in a community are key to building relationships
- promote reflection on what it means to be Australian and unpack existing preconceptions about Australian culture
- explore the importance of active listening and acknowledging Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander histories and cultures in building relationships and national identity
- enhance community relationships through respect and recognition of diverse cultural perspectives
- foster respectful communication with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community members as a cornerstone of community interaction
- encourage inclusivity by exploring key factors that contribute to building safe and cohesive communities
- explore the concepts of equality and equity through discussions on the Uluru Statement from the Heart
- support and promote student-led initiatives to ensure all school members feel safe, included, and appreciated.
