These resources are part of our The Final Quarter Curriculum Resources, created in collaboration with Shark Island Productions, the Australian Human Rights Commission, Reconciliation Australia, Narragunnawali and The Final Quarter.

This unit for Years 9 - 12, Challenging White Privilege, is designed to

  • support young people to define and understand white privilege and move beyond binary thinking about racism racism to a deeper understanding
  • critically analyse Australian symbols and their connections to privilege by using SWOT analyses and guided research
  • use Peggy McIntosh’s ‘Invisible Knapsack’ to identify the impacts of white privilege
  • develop text analysis skills and use the metaphor of an iceberg to understand views and values ‘below the surface’ of a text
  • develop students’ understanding of the role of language in reflecting and perpetuating attitudes and beliefs about race and privilege
  • promote a supportive and culturally aware classroom environment, to facilitate sensitive discussions around race and privilege
  • engage students through various activities including film analysis, critical readings, discussions, and presentations around the themes presented in The Final Quarter.
