Step 1

Begin this lesson by inviting students to think about the topics and issues they looked at in this unit by participating in a group brainstorming activity.

Break the class into four groups and assign each group with one of the following topics:

Plastic waste
Sharks
Shearwaters
Marine habitats

Give each group a piece of butcher's paper and some marker pens. Ask groups to write the topic they have been assigned on the butcher's paper. Explain to students that each group is to conduct a brainstorm to share all the point relating to this topic that they remember from the unit. Each group needs to record their brainstorm on the butcher's paper.

Once complete, invite groups to share their brainstorm with the class. The class may also contribute new suggestions once each group has had the chance to present.

Display the brainstorm sheets on the wall or board where all students can see them.

Step 1

Explain to students that they will now hear from the ocean guardians featured in Blue, each of whom hope to inspire people to make change on a range of issues relating to the ocean, including the ones the students looked at through this unit.

Remind students that through out the Blue unit they have learnt that our ocean ecosystems are are in trouble due to human behaviours. Problems such as overfishing, plastic in our oceans, pollution and coral bleaching are impacting our oceans. But, the solutions to these problems are all around us, and our students are part of the solution. Their voices, ideas and actions are vital to protecting the oceans and becoming the current generation of ocean guardians.

As a class, watch the following two clips. Invite students to record anything they find interesting or important in these clips.

Once complete, invite students to form a discussion circle. Students should share their thoughts and ideas about what they watched. Pose these questions to encourage the students to think about the ocean guardians they just heard from.

What important or interesting things did you see in these clips?
What did these clips make you think about?
Is it possible to change the world?
What is Madison Stewart passionate about?
How does Madison propose to change the world?
What questions do you still have about these clips?

Take Action: Creating a ripple of change media clip

Step 1

Explain to students that they are now going to create a media clip to convey a message. Break the class into small groups and explain that each will plan their clip, and then work to create their clip.

Steps for making a clip

1. The first step is to develop some ideas around a central theme. Encourage students to firstly develop their central theme or idea from the messages presented in Blue. Refer students back to the earlier brainstorming activity and invite students to select an issue that is most important to them from the brainstorm sheets created earlier in this lesson. Remind students that any themes or ideas they want to explore must be connected to the ocean.

2. Give each group several copies of the Storyboard Sheet (double-sided printing is fine). Students can use this to frame the message or story. Explain to the students that each frame should be used to further develop the story. Discuss with the students that they are required to use text, video and image sequences to communicate a clear and logical sequence.

3. Groups will then need to select their digital media. Encourage students to use digital media technologies that they are familiar with, such as iMovie, to create a clip that captures a story of change. If they do use iMovie, request that students use the trailer template as a baseline. This will provide the easiest and most succinct format for production.

4. When students have completed their planning, they can begin shooting their clip. Provide time for the students to take photos and shoot footage for the clip. This time is valuable and students will need to work effectively to cover the shots required for the clip.

5. Editing of the clips is crucial to ensure that the message has been conveyed. Direct students to be clear and concise with their messaging. The audience must be able to infer from the images, acting and from the text what the central theme and message is. The focus is to have a direct action or ripple that people can undertake as a result of watching the clip. Creating the ripple is important to facilitating a community message of Blue.

6. Invite groups to share their clips with the class! Students can also offer feedback on the clips presented, remembering to be kind, specific and helpful when providing their feedback:

Tips for providing feedback

Be kind - It can be hard sharing your ideas with other people so make sure you remain kind and supportive.

Be specific - Be clear about what you think and why. Rather than saying 'I like the colours', say something like 'I like the way these colours help create a mood that supports your message.

Be helpful - Try not to just say what is strong or weak, but also make suggestions about how things could be awseome.

Hot tip: You could also encourage students to share their story boards. This will allow students to review and reflect on what they have created.

Learning extension: Provide additional time for the students to develop the clips. Organise a time to share clips with a wider audience, creating a movie premier event (held at lunchtime or evening) or share with other classes or parents.
