Lesson summary

Students will analyse how people in design and technologies occupations consider ethical, security and sustainability factors to innovate and improve products, services and environments by exploring how electricity is transmitted from power plants to communities, homes, and workplaces. They will investigate suitable locations for transmission lines and understand the roles and technologies involved. Additionally, they will make judgments on how landscape factors and technologies control engineered systems.

  • investigate appropriate places for transmission lines
  • learn about the roles and technologies involved

  • describe how electricity is delivered to communities using infrastructure
  • plan for transmission line locations based on a variety of ethical and environmental considerations, as well as technologies available and explain some of the job roles involved.

Students learn to:

  • analyse how people in design and technologies occupations consider ethical, security and sustainability factors to innovate and improve products, services and environments (AC9TDE10K01)
  • analyse and make judgements on how the characteristics and properties of materials are combined with force, motion and energy to control engineered systems (AC9TDE10K03)

Relevant parts of Year 9 & 10 achievement standards: Students can explain how people consider factors that impact on design decisions and the technologies used to design and produce products, services and environments for sustainable living. For one or more of the technologies contexts, students explain the features of technologies and their appropriateness for purpose, and create designed solutions based on an analysis of needs or opportunities.

NSW Syllabus outcomes:

  • evaluates and explains the impact of past, current and emerging technologies on the individual, society and environments (DT5-3)
  • evaluates designed solutions that consider preferred futures, the principles of appropriate technology, and ethical and responsible design (DT5-5)

General capabilities: Critical and Creative Thinking, Digital Literacy, Ethical Understanding, Intercultural Understanding

Cross-curriculum priority: Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Histories and Cultures, Sustainability 

Level of teacher scaffolding: Medium: facilitate class discussion on transmission lines, job roles and the choices people make about working in certain conditions.
